Dr Mayank Bansal
Over a decade ago during residency my mentors would say this often - always operate as if you are operating on your very own family, and that will make all the surgical decisions more personal, and therefore more sound.
I operated on my doctor father for his cataract surgery, sequentially for both the eyes, and I think that this principle is what made it possible. All years of work, training, growing up and literally all years of life flashed in front of me as we walked my father into the operating room. But once inside, I saw him no different than all the people I have operated on so far. Operating on the same day, on my very close friend, an orthopedic surgeon, his father cataract surgery as well, felt exactly the same.
It was a fine balance as a son and a surgeon, and a broader outlook to not let emotions get the better of your critical intra-operative judgment. I truly thank almighty God, for bestowing me with both the mental strength and surgical skill to do so. Few things in life give you as much satisfaction, and this is certainly one of them.
